HSBC hosts grand musical soiree
According to William Shakespeare, “If music be the food of love, play on..." (Act 1, Scene 1, Twelfth Night).
To entertain music lovers with a feast of melodies, HSBC Bangladesh hosted a grand musical soiree held at the Oasis Garden of Pan Pacific Sonargaon Hotel in Dhaka recently. The event, Amar Prithibi Tumi, Tomar Prithibi Ami (You are my world and I am yours), went down memory lane of Bangla songs, originally penned, composed and recorded by renowned Bangladeshi lyricists, composers and singers.
Paying homage to the martyrs, eminent singer Sabina Yasmin enthralled the audience with the timeless song, Shob Kota Janala, penned and composed by Ahmed Imtiaz Bulbul and Nazrul Islam Babu.
Legendary music director Alam Khan, actor Sohel Rana and filmmaker Dewan Nazrul shared memories of the golden era of Bangla films. “Creation of good songs for films was always a natural practice," says Alam Khan. "I urge HSBC to support lyricists, composers, singers and music directors to create Bangla songs on a regular basis."
Pop icon Ferdous Wahid, along with Sabina Yasmin performed the song Amar Prithibi Tumi, Tomar Prithibi Ami from the film Ashami Hajir, directed by Dewan Nazrul.
Maqsoodul Haq, along with renowned band Feedback, mesmerised music aficionados with Moushumi and Melaye Jairey. They also paid tribute to Pop Guru Azam Khan and the iconic Ayub Bachchu, during their performance.
Samina Chowdhury fantastically performed several classics –Tumi Je Amar Kobita and Ki Likhi Tomaye, originally recorded by her father, the legendary Mahmudun Nabi.
Mitali Mukherjee took the music enthusiasts to the realm of nostalgia presenting her popular records -- Harano Diner Moto, Ei Dunia Akhon and Tumi Chokkher Aral Hoile.
In his welcome address, music connoisseur Mahbub-ur Rahman, also the Deputy CEO and Country Head of Wholesale Banking, HSBC Bangladesh, paid homage to the martyrs, who laid down their lives for the sake of our mother language and nation. “I am truly grateful to you all, who are supporting us in our attempt to reach the roots of Bangla songs, where the lovely word Tumi (you) has been metaphorically represented as our motherland and the beloved.,”
Paying his rich tribute to the martyrs of Language Movement, Francois de Maricourt, CEO of HSBC Bangladesh, recited the famous lines “Amar Bhai-er Roktey Rangano Ekushey February, Ami Ki Bhulitey Pari” in Bangla.
The allegory of the word Tumi was recurrent in the songs performed at the event. Promising singer Sanjida Mahmud Nandita, Tagore artiste Aditi Mohsin, seasoned singers Sabbir Zaman and Fatema-Tuj-Zohra entertained the audience with their performances as well.
The hosts for the event, Afzal Hossain, also an actor, painter and writer, along with his co-host, Mithila Farzana, added to the euphoria of the moment, with their beautiful recitation of poetry.
HSBC Bangladesh has regularly been holding soirees of Bangla music on various themes over the years, so as to celebrate Bangla music and culture.
