Create ‘Unique IDs’ for students: UGC to private unis
Chairman of the University Grants Commission of Bangladesh (UGC) Prof Dr Kazi Shahidullah today directed the authorities concerned of all private universities across the country to expedite the implementation of "Unique ID" for their students.
The UGC chairman came up with the directive while speaking as chief guest at a workshop on creating Unique IDs for students of private universities today, said a statement by the UGC.
Describing Unique ID as a student-friendly initiative, Prof Dr Kazi Shahidullah said creating unique IDs for private university students is a timely and important step.
The UGC chairman said private university students will get an identification number from the beginning to the end of their educational life through creating a Unique ID.
He said all the information, including that of admission, of students will remain preserved in the Unique ID. As a result, students do not have to face any problem in getting higher education at home and abroad and verifying their certificates for jobs.
Speaking at the workshop, UGC member Prof Bishwajit Chanda said all the information of the concerned private university and students will remain stored in the 16-digit Unique ID.
The UGC has taken the initiative to protect students from fraud and to ensure verification of certificates, he said.
Prof Chanda said it will be easier to scrutinize the numbers of students admitted as opposed to the allotted seats in private universities as well as to identify the fake certificate holders.
He said by creating Unique IDs, all the information of the students will be stored on the main server as well as on the UGC server and backup server.
If any university shuts or any server crashes due to any disaster, the information will be safe in the backup server and no students will face problems in verifying their certificates, the professor added.
