Bangladesh Foreign Minister appointed chair of Commonwealth Ministerial Group on Guyana
Bangladesh Foreign Minister AK Abdul Momen has been appointed as the Chair of Commonwealth Ministerial Group on Guyana, which works for the settlement of the Guyana-Venezuela territorial dispute.
He received unanimous support from all of the seven members of the group -- Antigua and Barbuda, Bangladesh, Britain, Canada, Guyana, Jamaica, and South Africa, said Bangladesh High Commission in UK in a statement released yesterday.
Bangladesh took over the chairmanship from South Africa for the Ministerial Group, which is currently overseeing the long-term territorial dispute between the British Guyana and Venezuela over their maritime territory.
Upon the appointment, Foreign Minister Momen said "Bangladesh looks forward to steering the Commonwealth Ministerial Group on the Guyana-Venezuela territorial dispute in line with Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman's visionary foreign policy doctrine of peaceful settlement of disputes through dialogue and international adjudication."
Chairing the first online meeting of the group under Bangladesh's chairmanship, he recalled Bangladesh's peaceful maritime boundary settlement with its neighbours, taking recourse of international arbitration and international law.
Commonwealth Secretary-General Baroness Patricia Scotland, foreign ministers of Antigua and Barbuda, Canada, Guyana, Jamaica, South Africa and the UK Commonwealth Envoy took part in the meeting.
Bangladesh High Commissioner to the UK and the Governor of the Commonwealth Board of Governors Saida Muna Tasneem also participated in the meeting to assist Foreign Minister AK Momen.
