No more than 3-day Eid holidays for RMG workers: home minister
Workers of ready-made garment factories will also not be able to extend the upcoming three-day Eid holiday, Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal said today.
He made the comment after a meeting at the home ministry on the overall situation in the garment industry, including payment of salaries, bonuses and leave of garment workers, amid the Covid-19 epidemic.
The meeting came ahead of the Eid-ul-Azha, which is likely to be observed on July 31 or August 1 based on the sighting of the moon.
"The upcoming Eid holiday will last for three days and it will not be extended. No government official can leave the workplace during the holidays," said the minister.
"Their [garment workers] Eid holiday is also for three days," Kamal said, adding, "RMG workers will not be able to leave their workplaces during this holiday."
The home minister said factory workers had already received their salaries for June.
The Ministry of Labour will take a decision on the July salary and bonus in a meeting with Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA), he added.
