Celltron EMS: Making reliable medical products at home
There is a high potential for domestic production and development of the products used in the medical field in the modern age of technology. Entrepreneurs are taking initiatives in the private and governmental sectors to promote domestic materials. Products made in Bangladesh are showcasing the country's capabilities in the digital world at home and abroad. Bangladesh has tremendous potential in the Electro Manufacturing Services (EMS) sector. Keeping that potential in mind, in 2015, Celltron EMS began manufacturing medical equipment in the country for the first time.
For years, Bangladesh has imported medical products from different countries across the world. No one was willing to invest directly in the production sector, as the profits in the local market by importing is significantly higher. Celltron EMS took the initiative to change that.
The organisation faced many predicaments in its initial stages. The production of circuit boards was hampered by a number of problems, including the lack of skilled manpower in designing and producing necessary software and the lack of direction about the permission or licensing authority. With the hard work and the cordial guidance of the government and various authorities, the organisation was able to move forward. After a rigorous quality control inspection, Celltron EMS obtained the license to produce four types of medical equipment. Till now, they have successfully produced and marketed 12 and 6 channel ECG machines, phototherapy machines, X-ray view boxes and patient monitors.
The manufacturing of medical products requires sophisticated and complex technology, where strict quality control of the products and the ability of the factory are essential. Celltron EMS has earned the ISO certificate for achieving a hundred percent qualification in these matters. At the same time, they have received the Japanese government's approval. There is a considerable demand for medicines made in Bangladesh abroad. In addition to the pharmaceutical industry, this initiative of making healthcare products will play an important role in Bangladesh's participation in the fourth generation industrial revolution. The brand name for products made by Celltron EMS is Aporajoya (Unbeatable), which symbolises our Liberation War and independence. At present, the medical equipment manufactured by Celltron EMS is being used in various hospitals, nursing homes and clinics of Bangladesh, including Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
Due to the availability of raw materials, cheap labour and the local market, the prices of these products are also at hand. The cost of purchasing a foreign ECG machine ranges from BDT 90,000 to BDT 1,20,000. However, the same quality product from Celltron EMS costs only BDT 75,000. In the past, Bangladesh had to spend BDT 2 to 4 billion every year to import medical equipment from abroad. The cost has been significantly reduced due to the affordable rates of domestic products. The development of this sector will simultaneously create many employment opportunities in the country. Locally developed medical industries will also play an integral role in reducing public spending, particularly in our healthcare sector. Once the local needs are fulfilled, neighbouring states, developing and developed nations will also be able to import medical equipment that are produced in Bangladesh.
