The origin story of Potu
Bangladesh cricket is replete with nicknames of players, many of which are just pet names given by their families and friends and some whose origins are a little more obscure.
The hero of Bangladesh's 28-run win over Zimbabwe in the first ODI on Sunday, Imrul Kayes's nickname of 'Potu' falls in the latter category.
Very highly rated among teammates, Imrul has often delivered for himself and also for Bangladesh in crucial times once and again proved his worth as the left-handed opener rescued the side while smashing a career-best 144.
In the post-match press conference, Imrul was asked whether the name Potu came from the toughness of character on display whenever his back is against the wall, but the left-hander had a different story to tell.
"No, actually the name came when I played in the Victoria Sporting Club where we had an official named Potu. I jokingly called another player by this name. But I have no idea how it suddenly became my name as everyone in the team now calls me Potu," Imrul said with a laugh.
It turns out the joke was on Imrul.
