Khulna register their second win in BPL
Although an 83-run fifth-wicket partnership between Sylhet Sixers batsmen Mohammad Nawaz and Nicholas Pooran took Sylhet close to the 170-run total posted by Khulna Titans, the bottom placed Khulna managed to register their second win in the sixth edition of the Bangladesh Premier League as they defeated Sylhet by 21 runs at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium today.
Being sent in to bat, Khulna got off to a good start, courtesy of a 73-run opening stand between Junaid Siddique and Brendan Taylor before the former was dismissed after scoring 33 runs off 23 balls. While Khulna kept on losing wickets at regular intervals after that, Taylor, who was looking in fine form also fell prey to Sylhet all-rounder Alok Kapali at one point and missed out on his fifty for just two runs, leaving his side in a spot of bother. However, David Wiese's 38 runs at the death ensured Khulna post a commendable 170-run total. Sylhet's Kapali was the pick of their bowlers, scalping four wickets for 22 runs.
Coming in to chase the challenging total, Sylhet struggled at the top as they lost both their openers -- Liton Das and Sabbir Rahman – in the powerplay. Sabbir who had just earned a recall in the National side for the upcoming New Zealand tour in February, could only manage a score of 13 runs off 12 balls. At one stage Sylhet was reeling on 56 for four but an 83-run fifth-wicket partnership between Mohammad Nawaz and Nicholas Pooran took Sylhet agonizingly close to the target before the latter was dismissed after having scored 28 off 21 runs. Nawaz was the next to fall after authoring a brilliant 34-ball 54-run knock as Sylhet eventually fell short, managing a total of 149 runs for the loss of seven wickets.
