Hom hits Bangladesh's fastest T20 50
Shinepukur Cricket Club became the first team to qualify for the semifinal in the inaugural edition of Dhaka Premier League T20 yesterday after defeating Mohammedan Sporting Club by 22 runs courtesy of ShuvagataHom's fiery 16-ball fifty –the fastest fifty by a Bangladeshi in T20 cricket.
After electing to bat, Shinepukurposted 192 for four. However, they had managed just 109 for four in 15.2 overs before Shuvagata walked in to the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur and played an explosive unbeaten 18-ball 58, smashing four boundaries and six sixes.
Shuvagata was partnered well by TowhidHridoy, who remained unbeaten for 66 runs off 41 balls.The duo strung together an 83-run fifth-wicket partnership with the final 28 balls of the innings.
In reply, Irfan Sukkur's unbeaten29-ball 52 went in vain as Mohammedan eventually fell short, managing 170 for nine to be the second team eliminated after Legends of Rupganj.
In the other game, played at Mirpur under lights,Prime Bank batsmen Ariful Haque and Nazmul Hossain Milon strung together an unbeaten 87-run fifth-wicket partnership to post a challenging 169 for four, helping their side win the game by 47 runs against Brothers Union.
Electing to bat, although opener Rubel Mia 44 runs at the top, it was the unbeatenpartnership between Ariful and Nazmul that saw them post the challenging total. Ariful contributed with 59 runs off 33 balls while Nazmul scored 45 off 21 balls.
In reply, Brother could only manage 122 for eight with a team-high 39 runs coming from Fazle Mahmud.
The two other matches, played at the Khan Shaheb Osman Ali Stadium in Fatullah, were interrupted by rain. The first was reduced to 10 overs a side -- a game where Gazi Group won by 27 runs against Bangladesh KriraShikkhaProtisthan.
Opener Rony Talukdar's quickfire 16-ball 41 and Sajjadul Haque's eight-ball 20-run cameo saw Gazi post 123 for four. However, despite Akbar Ali's 43 runs at the death, BKSP could only manage 96 for four and eventually lost the game.
In the second game atFatullah, Uttara Sporting rode on opener Tanzid Hasan's unbeaten 57-ball 72 to successfully chase the 109 for seven posted by KhelagharSamajKallyan Samity in a game that was reduced to 17 overs a side.
Electing to bat, Khelaghar struggled from the beginning.Only a team-high 28 from Rafsan Al Mahmud and 20 runs from Moinul Islam helped the side cross the 100-run mark. Coming in to chase, Uttara lost three quick wickets and were reeling on three for 23 at one stage. However, opener Tanzid remained unbeaten at one end and saw his side through eventually, ensuring that Khelaghar's elimination.
