East turn the tide as Jayed scalps six
East Zone pacer Abu Jayed ran riot on the third day of their Bangladesh Cricket League fourth round encounter against North Zone, ending with figures of six wickets for 74 runs and helped East turn the tide of the game at the Shahid Kamruzzaman Stadium in Rajshahi today.
North started the day well with the two overnight batsmen -- Naeem Islam and Farhad Hossain -- adding 66 runs before the latter was trapped in front by a Taijul Islam delivery and returned to the pavilion after contributing 64 runs off 143 balls. Tanbir Hayder, the next batsman in, could only score two runs as he followed the same trajectory as Farhad, falling prey to Enamul Haque Jnr in the same manner.
After the two quick wickets, the ship was somewhat steadied by an 89-run fifth-wicket stand between Naeem and Dhiman Ghosh. However, it was the Jayed show after that. The 23-year old pacer started by breaking the crucial partnership, removing Dhiman after he had scored a quick-fire 68 off 70 balls. Jayed went on to pick up four out of the five North wickets which fell, including the all important scalp of Nayeem, who authored an impressive 243-ball 100 to register his second ton in this edition of the tournament.
In reply, East batsmen backed their bowlers' efforts well as they ended the day on 90 for the loss of two wickets, allowing them to take a 179-run lead with 8 wickets remaining.
In the other match between Central Zone and South Zone at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium in Chattogram, South suffered a batting collapse and could only stretch their total to 397 after losing the remaining five wickets on the day while adding just 88 runs.
Coming in to bat, Central suffered the same fate as their counterparts, losing wickets at regular intervals and eventually ending the day on 180 for the loss of five wickets. Central skipper Shuvagata Hom remained not out on 55 runs off 114 balls while South's Mahedi Hasan took three of the five wickets which fell on the day.
