DPL opens with a blast
The opening day of traditional 50-over version of the Dhaka Premier League (DPL) saw three enthralling encounters at three different venues today. Opener Jahurul Islam became the first centurion of this edition as his unbeaten 121 runs off 147 balls helped defending champions Abahani Limited to post 216 for nine and defend it comfortably to win the game by 60 runs against Bangladesh Krira Shikkha Protisthan (BKSP) at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur.
The other two games also offered plenty of exciting cricketing action for the fans. At the BKSP- 3 stadium, Legends of Rupganj edged Brothers Union with a three-wicket victory and just a ball to spare, courtesy of Shahreer Nafees' 59 runs that helped Rupganj chase 220 for eight posted by Brothers. Uttara Sporting registered a nine-run victory over Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club in the other game that saw three fifties, at the Khan Shaheb Osman Ali Stadium in Fatullah.
Jahurul pulled defending champions Abahani out of trouble after they slumped to four for 53 with a 112-run partnership for the fifth wicket alongside Mohammad Saifuddin, who struck a gritty 80-ball 55. Jahurul unbeaten ton was laced with 13 fours and one six as he took his side to a challenging score. The bowlers did their part with Nazmul Islam three for 30 in 10 overs while Rubel Hossain, Saifuddin and Sabbir Rahman bagged one wicket each.
