‘Did not expect to score a hundred’
Mehedi Miraz's Rajshahi Kings have had a topsy-turvy season so far but with back-to-back wins against Dhaka Dynamites and Comilla Riders, they climbed to fourth in the standings, level on points with Chittagong Vikings and Comilla.
The victory today against Comilla was made possible, thanks to a fantastic ton from Laurie Evan -- his first T20 ton and also the BPL's first ton this season. The Englishman was not among the runs and said that since arriving here, he only felt comfortable for the first time during yesterday's training session.
That led to quick-fire transformation, much like his innings had today, after he started at a slow pace. He did not expect to play the knock he did after scoring 67 runs off the last 26 balls he faced.
"Feels amazing," he reiterated. "This game is a rollercoaster. It's been pretty tough up until now. The next game I could be out first ball so you have to be as level as you can. When times are tough you sort of build yourself up and keep the faith. I certainly did not expect I was going to score a hundred today," he said.
He admitted that confidence from the coaches and owners played its part today as he played the special knock. "Yeah, it is special," he said about the significance of the innings. "I have come close once before. I am just grateful to the coaches and the owners for giving me an opportunity because I certainly did not think I deserved it today since I did not score any runs [before]," he added.
The Rajshahi side have been depending on their bowlers to keep them afloat and pacer Kamrul Islam Rabbi turned up with four wickets for just 10 runs while Mustafizur bowled economically with brilliant accuracy in the death overs. Evans said that it was a big thing to win against Comilla.
"It's big. We were just hovering over that qualification spot. To beat a team like Comilla who beat us so convincingly the first time around, you know that they got some good players and we have got some guys who are struggling a bit with confidence. We have not quite found our best team yet but our bowling has been superb so it's about trying to get a good score on the board for our bowlers to defend cause they are pretty good. It's great moving forward and great for the coaches and owners who have showed faith on the players," he concluded.
