Both second round games end in draw
North Zone batsman Sunzamul Islam displayed exactly the type of temperament and attitude a batsman requires for the longer version of the game against Central Zone in their Bangladesh Cricket League second round encounter at the Shaheed Chandu Stadium in Bogura yesterday.
Although the match ended in a draw, one can say that it had all the elements to make it an exciting match -- four five wicket hauls, a ten wicket haul over the period of two innings, a century and lastly a rock solid 227-ball 92-run knock from the star of the day, Sunzamul.
Chasing the target of 284, North started the final day on seven for the loss of one wicket on the board, meaning that they needed 277 more runs on the final day to win. The possibility for Central to claim North's remaining nine wickets was very much on the cards as well, given the way the pitch helped seamers over the past three days.
However Sunzamul made sure that did not happen as he batted for over five hours, facing almost half of the 77 overs bowled on the day. North finished on 255 for the loss of nine wickets to secure the draw, courtesy of the patient yet incredible innings from Sunzamul. Central's Abu Hider was the pick of the bowlers, claiming five of the eight wickets that fell on the day and ending with figures of six wickets for 86 runs.
At the Shaheed Kamruzzaman Stadium in Rajshahi, the match between East Zone and South Zone ended the way it was expected to -- in a draw. South opener Shahriar Nafees could not add to his 81-run total as he was trapped in front by a Mahmudul Hasan delivery and became the first to return to the pavilion. However, unlike his partner at the other end, Anamul Haque did manage to build on from where he left off the day before, scoring 133 runs off 253 balls before falling prey to Enamul Haque Jnr. South ended the day on 377 for five.
