Big question mark over umpiring
A controversial decision made by match umpire Tanvir Ahmed in the fourth over of the series deciding third T20I between Bangladesh and West Indies halted the match for about eight minutes in Mirpur yesterday.
In chase of a challenging 191-run target, Bangladesh opener Liton Das sliced an Oshane Thomas length delivery off the last ball of the fourth over only to be caught at mid-off. However, a no-ball was called by umpire Tanvir. Replays showed that Thomas had a part of his foot behind the line, leading to an outburst from the West Indies players.
This was followed by a drawn out discussion among the Caribbean cricketers where skipper Carlos Brathwaite was seen suggesting to take a review -- an unusual appeal seeing as the rules provide no such option to review a no-ball unless the batsman is given out. Nonetheless, the robust appeal prompted the on-field umpires to consult with the TV-umpire.
The umpire then stuck with his initial decision and Liton survived, however, the situation can be justified if other incidences are taken into account.
The fifth ball of the same over, which was struck for a four by Liton, was also called a no-ball but replays showed that it was a legal delivery. There were also instances of poor umpiring in the second T20I as well. Evin Lewis and Shimron Hetmyer were given out by umpire Tanvir and Gazi Sohel respectively only to have the decision reverted later as reviews showed huge edges on both occasions.
