Ram Krishna Shaha
I would like to express my happiness citing few lines of our famous poet Jibonando Das, “Chokh Bheshe Jay, Chokh Bhore Jay, Anonder Osrute”. Being awarded for making a movie is a great achievement for me. This recognition, this honor is overwhelming. I was always confident about my work. I won't say this is all unexpected but my one worry was my lack of experience. I am a novice in this field- still doing my Bachelor's from the Department of Theatre and Performance Studies, University of Dhaka. Ideas thrive plenty here, but our resources are limited. Cinema, the art of presenting and story-telling is cherished by many but can only be mastered by a few. Compiling one's thoughts into works and showing it to the mass people is not like a walk in the park. This platform has created a scope for us newcomers to showcase our humble works to the nation. It's not the prize money, but the respect and exposure that this platform has given us, is priceless. Saying a mere 'thank you' would never be enough. My passion for films started when I was in class 8. When I was in my secondary level, I joined Pathshala to learn the tactics to make my dream come true. While getting trained in Pathshala, I got the chance to work with UNICEF as a trainer in one of their ad projects. That was a huge push for me. I won't say I am content with my work because I feel the nation lacks platforms where I can exhibit these works. The Standard Chartered-The Daily Star Celebrating Life is one such platform; but there should be many more like this in order for our works to get the proper recognition. The documentary for which I have been awarded was inspired by a street-play. Despite being devoid of necessary essentials required for making a movie, I could only make it due to the support I received from my teachers and friends. Thus this prize money is more than an award for me. What we newbie's mostly lack are essential resources like camera, lens, light due to lack of funds. This award is an encouragement that would greatly facilitate my endeavors.
