Sangram chief reporter sent to jail after arrest yesterday

A Dhaka court today sent daily Sangram Chief Reporter Ruhul Amin Gazi, also president of a faction of Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists (BFUJ), to jail, a day after he was arrested in a sedition case.

Metropolitan Magistrate Debdash Chandra Adhikary passed the order after rejecting his bail petition in the case.

Ruhul Amin Gazi was produced before the court by Hatirjheel police today. Police arrested him from the newspaper's office in Hatirjheel yesterday evening.

Earlier on September 22, the same court issued an arrest warrant against him after Abdur Rashid, officer-in-charge of Hatirjheel Police Station and also investigation officer of the case, submitted a charge sheet against him and the daily's editor Abul Asad on September 7.

Freedom Fighter Commander Mohammad Afzal filed a case against the duo on December 13 last year under the Digital Security Act.

The case was over a report the newspaper printed on December 12 last year headlined "Today is the sixth martyrdom anniversary of Shaheed Abdul Quader Molla."

Quader Molla, former assistant secretary general of Jamaat-e-Islami, was hanged at the old Dhaka central jail in 2013 in a case over committing crimes against humanity during the Liberation War.
