Promulgate ordinance to enact law on EC if necessary: BSD
President Abdul Hamid today held separate dialogues at Bangabhaban with two more political parties -- Bangladesher Samyabadi Dal (M-L) and Bangladesh National Awami Party (BNAP) -- on reconstitution of the Election Commission.
During its talks, BSD, a component in the ruling Awami League-led 14-party alliance, recommended the president to promulgate an ordinance, if necessary, to enact a law for formation of the EC.
“We have also proposed that the president may convene a parliament session on an emergency basis to enact the law on forming the new election commission,” BSD General Secretary Dilip Barua told reporters at the Bangabhaban entrance after emerging from the dialogue.

A 12-member delegation of the party led by Dilip Barua participated in the dialogue with the president this afternoon. The party placed a nine-point proposal during the dialogue.
The proposals also include enactment of a law in line with the country’s constitution on formation of the new EC, and forming a constitutional council under the law, comprised of prime minister, opposition leader, speaker of parliament, chief justice and attorney general, which will propose names to the president for his consideration to appoint as the CEC and election commissioners.
The left-leaning party also proposed to appoint at least two women as election commissioners.
It also suggested forming a seven-member search committee comprising of the chief election commissioner, representative of the chief justice, anti-corruption commission chairman, public service commission chairman, comptroller and auditor general, a media representative and an educationalist.
Asked, Dilip Barua said President Abdul Hamid had assured them that he will try his best to form a strong Election Commission through his dialogue with the different political parties.
After BSD, a 10-member delegation of BNAP led by its executive president Amina Ahmed MP joined the talks with Abdul Hamid.
“We also told the president that no law was enacted in line with the constitution in the last 45 years to form the EC,” she said emerging from the meeting. “We have fervently requested the president to take measures to formulate the law.”
The president has so far held dialogues with 13 political parties that started on December 18 through his view exchange meeting with BNP.
He will also hold dialogue with nine other political parties including the ruling Awami League.
The president is scheduled to hold talks with AL on January 11.
