AL starts selling nomination papers for UZ polls
Awami League (AL) started the sale of nomination forms today among those who want to contest the first-phase Upazila Parishad elections on party tickets.
The sale of nomination forms started at the AL President Sheikh Hasina's political office at Dhanmondi with the sale of a nomination paper to Asadul Haque, an aspirant from Kendua Upazilla for the chairman post.
AL General Secretary Obaidul Quader inaugurated the sale of the nomination papers.
He said the local government election steering committee will announce the names of the AL nominated candidates on February 8.
According to the Election Commission (EC), elections to 87 upazila parishads will be held on March 10 in the first phase.
The last date for submitting nomination papers is February 11 while that of withdrawal is February 19.
EC Secretary Helal Uddin Ahmed unveiled the schedule for the first-phase UZ elections at a press conference at the Nirbachan Bhaban yesterday.
Earlier, the EC said the fifth upazila parishad elections will be held in five phases from March while in 2014, elections in 487 upazilas were held in six phases between February and May.
According to the electoral law, election to any upazila council has to take place at least six months before the tenure of the local government body expires.
