BNP standing committee member Moudud Ahmed today said that the Election Commission will be helpless if it works under a political government during elections.

“No matter how powerful the commission is, it will be helpless under a political government during elections,” Moudud said at a discussion at National Press Club in Dhaka.

Sharing his experience of holding an election under a political government, Moudud said no election commission can be able to discharge its electoral duties impartially.

Referring to the prime minister’s eagerness to accept the president’s decision over formation of the election Moudud said: “I welcome Awami League for its move.”

He said his party expects that the president will form a search committee based on opinion of the political parties. “And it will be the first step to bringing back the democratic atmosphere in the country,” he said.

About the original design of the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban, the former law minister said the motive behind bringing the design from US is to remove Ziaur Rahman’s grave from Sher-e-Bangla Nagar area.

Terming the plan as farsighted, Moudud said, “It will be a political mistake.”
