Kazi Faruk’s party can contest polls now
The High Court today cleared the way for Oikyaboddha Nagorik Andolon, a political party led by Dr Kazi Faruk Ahmed, to contest the next parliamentary election.
The court stayed the Election Commission’s decision that cancelled the registration of Oikyaboddha Nagorik Andolon with the commission.
It also issued a rule asking the EC and the government to explain in four weeks why the cancellation of Oikyaboddha Nagorik Andolon’s registration should not be declared illegal.
The HC bench of Justice Sheikh Hassaan Arif and Justice Razik-Al-Jalil came up with the order and rule following a writ petition filed by Dr Kazi Faruk Ahmed challenging the Election Commission’s decision that on October 4 this year cancelled the registration of this party.
The petitioner’s lawyer advocate Manzill Morshed told The Daily Star that there is no legal bar for his client’s party to contest the upcoming parliamentary election following the HC stay order.
