Rohingya issue: AL for int’l pressure on Myanmar
Ruling party Awami League today called upon the international community to mount pressure on Myanmar to repatriate the Rohingyas residing in Bangladesh.
Also, the ruling 14-party coalition hoped that the world would respond to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s call to push Myanmar to resolve the Rohingya crises and stop violence.
The alliance came up with their call after a meeting at party President Sheikh Hasina’s Dhanmondi office this noon. Awami League Presidium Member Mohammad Nasim later briefed the media.
PM Hasina has been trying to resolve the Rohingya crises through diplomatic channels, Nasim said. “Our prime minister has called upon the world to pressure Myanmar to stop the killings and I hope everyone will respond.”
Responding to a query, Nasim, also the health minister, said many countries as well as the United Nations have condemned the violence going on against Rohingya community.
Blaming BNP for doing dirty politics over Rohingya issue, Nasim said the party’s statement criticising the government’s diplomatic efforts is meaningless. He called upon BNP to come forward to resolve the issue.
Briefing to reporters, Workers Party president Rashed Khan Menon stressed the needs for national consensus so that Rohingya crisis cannot harm national security and political stability of Bangladesh.
Jatiya Party (JP) Secretary General Shahidul Islam said Rohingya issue is Myanmar’s internal problem and the country will have to solve it with its own efforts.
