Awami League will celebrate the historic homecoming day of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman on January 10 in a befitting manner.

The AL will hold a rally at Suhrawardy Udyan in Dhaka on January 10 marking the day with due respect, Biplob Barua, deputy office secretary of the party, told The Daily Star this evening.

Sheikh Mujibur Rahman returned home on this day in 1972 after a long confinement in the then West Pakistan during the Liberation War of Bangladesh in 1971.

Pakistan army arrested Bangabandhu at his Dhanmondi residence on the night of March 25, 1971 and sent him to a West Pakistani jail the following day.

After a nine-month long struggle for independence, the nation achieved victory on December 16, 1971, and the then Pakistani authorities were eventually forced to free the founding father of Bangladesh Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

AL and its different associate organisations have drawn up elaborate programmes to observe the day.

AL will hoist the national flag and the party flag at its central office, at Bangabandhu Memorial Museum in the capital's Dhanmondi Road 32, and party offices across the country on the day.

A delegation of senior AL leaders is expected to lay wreath at the grave of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman at Tungipara in Gopalganj on the day.
