Now you see it, now you don't... the hijab has played a key role in Iranian beauty over the past century, as demonstrated by the latest video in the "100 Years of Beauty" series.

Starring American Iranian model Sabrina Sarajy, episode three of the series filmed by Cut.com explores the nation's at times complex and political relationship with female fashion and beauty trends.

The time-lapse clip shows Sabrina modeling the key trends for each of the past 10 decades, beginning with her sporting a conservative makeup-free look and a headscarf in the 1910s. By the 1920s the Iranian women's movement had been launched, and Sabrina is sporting a more relaxed and made-up look for the shot.

The 1930s section sees her modeling short hair, red lipstick and a chic black cloche hat to reflect the banning of the headscarf by Reza Shah Pahlavi, the Shah at the time. The glamorous look is further heightened for the 40s, with Sabrina's hair tumbling around her shoulders and her lipstick bolder than ever.

The 50s aesthetic largely matches the Hollywood ideal at the time, with high-voltage glamour the order of the day. An impressive beehive, kohled-out eyes and gorgeous frosted lips symbolize the arrival of the swinging 60s, while the 70s calls for big wavy hair worn loose, with a natural lip and glammed-up eyes.

A dramatically more sober look rings in the 1980s, with the introduction of a black hijab representing the Iranian Revolution and the consequent return of the headscarf. The 90s look is slightly more colorful, featuring a polka-dot hijab and a slick of pink lipstick.

The new millennium brings about a more varied color palette, with an emerald hijab, a sweep of violet eyeshadow and wavy hair, accompanied by two streaks of lime face paint smeared across her cheeks to represent the country's 'Green Movement' for civil liberties. And by the time we get to the current decade, Sabrina is pictured with natural makeup, a glossy blow-dry and a deep red head shawl.

The video is the third installation of the series, which has previously explored the last century of US beauty trends.
