So callous, so careless!

PHOTO: STARBelieve it or not, 'Government of Republic Bangladesh' instead of 'Government of the People's Republic of Bangladesh' is inscribed on quite a few signboards describing a government project in the municipality.
The Local Government Engineering Department (LGED) initiated a Tk 2.25 crore project titled 'Urban Governance and Infrastructure Improvement (Sector) Project, Phase-II" to renovate or reconstruct different damaged roads in Nilphamari municipality area in May this year.
The project was handed over to the municipality authorities for implementation while LGED continues to monitor the work, LGED sources said.
Visiting different project sites including the road near PDB office at Sabujpara, Khairat Hossain Road near Zila Parishad office, Kazibari area near Circuit House on Monday, this correspondent found that the signboards with project description were marked with 'Government of Republic Bangladesh' at the top.
Interestingly, the signboard of the project work in front of the deputy commissioner's office bears the correct name 'Government of the People's Republic of Bangladesh'.
Standing beside a project signboard at Sabujpara, this correspondent found two school students arguing over the correct term.
One of them was saying that it would be Government of the People's Republic of Bangladesh while the other thought that Government of Republic Bangladesh was right as a renowned government office like LGED wrote so.
"Wrongly writing the name of our dear country by a responsible government department is utterly unacceptable. It is a gross dishonour to the nation and confuses people especially the young learners," said retired college teacher Naresh Roy, also convenor of local unit of Sacheton Nagorik Samaj.
When asked, executive engineer of district office of LGED Abul Kalam Pramanik said, "We are not responsible for the matter as the project is initiated by LGED while being implemented by engineering department of the local municipality."
Sirajul Islam Sarker, executive engineer of Nilphamari municipality, said, "I have received complaints about the matter. We are going to send letters to the contractors concerned to put the correct name of the country on the signboards by 30th of this month. In case of their failure we will take stern action."
