Former state minister for information Prof Abu Sayeed was recently conferred a PhD by Rajshahi University (RU) in recognition of his research on the country's independence and its diplomatic aspect.
With “Independence of Bangladesh: Diplomatic War” as his PhD thesis, the politician and writer of 18 books conducted research on the Liberation War for over three-and-a-half years at RU's history department under Prof Md Mahbubur Rahman.
The complicated diplomatic steps taken by the then Soviet Union, US, Pakistan, China and India, and the inactive role of the United Nations centring the Liberation War was core to his research.
Prof Sayeed has been conducting research on the Liberation War, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and contemporary politics for about four decades.
He was a member of the then Pakistan National Assembly in 1970 and of the 34-member committee formed in 1972 to formulate the draft constitution of Bangladesh and the former vice-president of Rajshahi University Central Students' Union.
