All-female commando police team starts work in India
India's first all-female commando police team, equipped to fight terrorists and pull off hostage rescue operations, started working on Friday, reports our New Delhi correspondent.
The 40-women Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) team of the Delhi Police was launched by Home Minister Rajnath Singh after it underwent 15 months of rigorous training in handling anti-terror operations, urban and jungle warfare, hostage rescue and counter-sniping .
The SWAT team, consisting of women from north eastern states of India which was once a hot-bed of insurgency, will be deployed along with about five all-male commando teams in the Indian capital on August 15, the Indian Independence day when Prime Minister Narendra Modi gives the customary address to the nation from the ramparts of the Red Fort in India.
Singh described the SWAT team as part of women empowerment and the Delhi Police has given an opportunity to these women to prove themselves with the new responsibility, reports the correspondent.
The police force across Indian states is dominated by men.
