Pillar guards placed to protect Payra bridge
Forty-eight steel guards have been placed around the two main pillars of the Payra bridge to protect them from collisions.
Twenty-four steel guards have been placed around each main pillar, in the middle of the river at Lebukhali point in Patuakhali, said Abdul Halim, director of the bridge project.
The project directors said the guards will increase the durability of the bridge.
The world-standard technologies used in constructing the bridge will inform of any possible damage in advance so that preventive measures can be taken, Abdul Halim said.
The bridge on Dhaka-Kuakata highway will open to traffic this month, he added.
The preventive measures have been taken as pillars of Padma bridge were repeatedly hit by ferries recently, the project director said.
The project director said this is for the first time in the country that a condition monitoring system has been used for the bridge. If there is a possibility of any damage to the bridge due to natural calamities, including thunderstorms and earthquakes or overloaded vehicles, the system will issue a warning.
It is the second bridge in the country to be built on the "extra alliance cable system" and that's why the main part of the bridge stands on one pillar in the middle of the river and two on either side, the official said.
Chinese firm -- Longjian Road and Bridge Construction -- is building the bridge with the joint investment of Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development, Fund for International Development and the Government of Bangladesh.
The 1,470m long and 19.6m wide bridge is connected on both sides by cables.
The Roads and Highways Department started the construction work of Lebukhali-Payra Bridge in 2016.
