Dolphin found dead in Teesta
A dolphin was found dead in the Teesta river in Rangpur's Kaunia upazila yesterday. Mahbubul Alam, assistant fisheries official, said some fishers found the dolphin while catching fish in the river in the morning. Later, they informed police and fisheries officials.
A large number of people gathered in the area as the news spread, said Shafiqul Alam Shafi, UP chairman of Deepa Madhupur in Kaunia. This was for the first time a dolphin was seen in this part of the river, he added.
Mahbubul said, "The mammal came here from the Indian upstream. It's around 8 feet in length and weighed 140 kg. We are trying to find out how it died."
The aquatic mammal was buried beside the river.
In June 2018, two dolphins were rescued from the Dharla river in Kurigram. One of them was brought to the Rangpur zoo, but it did not survive.
