Extortion calls an attempt to make RCC polls questionable: EC
EC officials today said a group of people are trying to make the Rajshahi City Corporation election questionable through extortion calls to candidates using the fake profile of an election commissioner.
The group, using the photograph of Election Commissioner Brigadier General (retd) Md Ahsan Habib Khan on their WhatsApp profile, has demanded money from at least one councillor candidate in return of election favours, Returning Officer Delwar Hossain told The Daily Star today.
The councillor candidate and Boalia thana election officer filed separate general diaries with Boalia Police Station in this regard, the RO said.
In a press release, alerting all, the RO said the EC or any officials related to the election has no connections with such activities.
The press release said miscreants are carrying out such activities to make the election questionable.
Ward 24 councillor candidate Arman Hossain said he received a call on WhatsApp yesterday from an person, who used a fake profile using the election commissioner's name and photo, and sought Tk 8,000.
Arman said he informed the police about the call immediately.
The location of the caller was traced to Cox's Bazar, Suhrawardy Hossain, officer-in-charge of Boalia Police Station, said.
"We sent the details to Cox's Bazar police for further investigation," he said.
