EC to use EVM on large scale in Comilla polls
The Election Commission is planning to use electronic voting machines (EVM) on a large scale in the upcoming Comilla City Corporation polls.
It has come up with the plan after the use of EVM in the Narayanganj City Corporation (NCC) polls proved to be a success, Election Commissioner M Sakhawat Hossain told reporters at the EC Secretariat yesterday.
To familiarise people with the machines, the commission will put them on display at various points in Comilla city, he added.
More than one lakh people cast their votes using the machines in Narayanganj on October 30. In the Chittagong City Corporation elections last year, the machine was first used on an experimental basis.
The election commissioner said the LGRD ministry is yet to complete demarcation of Comilla City Corporation, which has create confusion whether the elections will be held in due time.
According to the Local Government (City Corporation) Act 2009, the city corporation is supposed to go to polls within 180 days of its formation.
Comilla City Corporation was formed with Comilla Municipality and Comilla Sadar Municipality (South) on July 10 this year following a longstanding demand of the locals.
"We wrote to the LGRD ministry twice in this regard but are yet to get any reply," Sakhawat said, adding that the EC can announce election schedules only after the ministry publishes a gazette completing the demarcation.
