Animal Rescuer Society demands amendment of animal cruelty laws
For the last 12 years, Robinhood — The Animal Rescuer Society has been working for raising awareness on animal rights, organise animal rescue and their rehabilitation. Back in 2019, the organisation was connected with 999, the national emergency hotline and has been working to rescue animals ever since.
Everyday countless animals are being abused in Bangladesh. Some are even not aware enough to consider this a crime. It is also difficult to prosecute perpetrators of abuse as the current animal welfare act does not allow enough provisions for the safety of the animals.
A human chain was formed in front of the National Press Club on Wednesday, 1 February 2023 demanding amendment of laws protecting the rights of animals and to amend existing laws.
"We are all aware of the stories of torture, oppression, and cruelty around us. Sometimes the culprits get punished; sometimes, they do not with the help of loopholes in the law. But we as a nation are indifferent to the torture of domestic animals living among us. People are constantly torturing them," said Afzal Khan, Chairman, Robinhood the Animal Rescuer Society at the gathering.
