HC rejects bail prayer of suspended DIG Mizan’s nephew
The High Court today again refused to grant bail to Mahmudul Hasan, suspended sub-inspector of Kotwali Police Station and nephew of suspended deputy inspector general (DIG) Mizanur Rahman, in a corruption case.
The court, however, issued a rule asking the Anti Corruption Commission (ACC) and the government to explain in two weeks why Mahmudul should not be granted bail in the case.
The HC bench of Justice Md Nazrul Islam Talukder and Justice Ahmed Sohel came up with the rule following a petition filed by Mahmudul seeking bail in the case.
Deputy Attorney General AKM Amin Uddin Manik told The Daily Star that Mahmudul cannot get released from jail following the HC rule.
Lawyer Motaher Hossain Sazu appeared for Mahmudul while lawyer Khurshid Alam Khan represented the ACC.
In the bail petition, Mahmudul mentioned that he is not involved in any corruption, he has been suffering in jail for a long period of time and his mother has died in the meantime, lawyer Motaher told this correspondent.
On July 29 last year, the HC had refused to grant bail to Mahmudul in the same case.
On June 24 last year, ACC filed the case with its Integrated District Office in Dhaka against the suspended DIG Mizanur, his wife Sohelia Anar Ratna and nephew Mahmudul Hasan on charges of amassing over Tk 3 crore beyond known sources of income.
On July 4 last year, a Dhaka court sent Mahmudul to jail after he surrendered before it in the corruption case.
