43 die of Covid, 8,354 get infected
At least 43 Covid-19 patients died in 24 hours preceding 8:30am yesterday, the highest single-day death toll since the third wave of the virus hit the country early last month.
This is also the highest single-day fatality from novel coronavirus since September 19 last year.
On that day, the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) had also reported 43 deaths. At that time, the Delta Covid variant was the most prevalent strain of the virus in the country.
The new Omicron variant spread since January. The daily positivity rate rose to the all-time highest 33.37 percent on January 28, up from only 2.43 percent on January 1.
Yesterday, a total of 8,354 new Covid cases were logged in those 24 hours. The positivity rate was 20.03 percent.
With the latest count, the total number of deaths rose to 28,670 and the total number of confirmed cases went up to 18,79,255.
Of the 43 deceased, 26 were males and 17 females.
Meanwhile, 10,800 Covid patients recovered in the same 24-hour period.
