MC College Rape: Charges framed against eight BCL activists
A Sylhet court yesterday framed charges against all eight accused of a case filed over the gang rape of a woman at Murari Chand (MC) College hostel on September 25 last year.
Sylhet Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal Judge Md Mohitul Haque framed charges against the eight Chhatra League activists, said Rashida Syda Khanom, public prosecutor of the tribunal.
The trial of the case will start on January 24 with recording testimonies of witnesses, the prosecutor said, adding that there are 52 witnesses in the case.
Meanwhile, the tribunal denied bail to accused Arjun Lasker and Mahbubur Rahman Rony and dismissed appeals seeking acquittal of Saifur Rahman, Mahbubur Rahman Rony and Rabiul Islam of the case.
On December 3, Sub-inspector Indranil Bhattacharya, also investigation officer of the case, submitted the charge sheet to Sylhet Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Abul Kashem's court.
The case was later forwarded to the tribunal which accepted the charge sheet on January 13.
According to the charge sheet, the victim and her husband were forcibly taken to the hostel by the accused when the couple went to visit the college area in the evening of September 25.
Later, the accused asked for Tk 50,000 as ransom. Being refused, they raped the victim after tying her husband, snatched her gold jewellery and mugged Tk 2,000.
In the charge sheet, six were charged with rape of the woman, while two were made accused of abetting them.
The rape accused are Saifur Rahman, 28, Shah Mahbubur Rahman Rony, 25, Tarekul Islam, 28, Arjun Laskar, 26, Mohammad Ainuddin alias Ainul, 26, and Misbaul Islam Rajon, 27.
Other accused are: Rabiul Hasan, 25, and Mahfuzur Rahman Masum, 25.
All are now in jail.
The accused were involved in the politics of BCL, the pro-Awami League student front, said local BCL sources.
