Shaqiri and Xhaka to face disciplinary action

Switzerland stars Xherdan Shaqiri and Granit Xhaka are to face disciplinary action from FIFA after their controversial goal celebration against Serbia in their second match of the group stage. Switzerland won the match 2-1 against Serbia after falling behind from Aleksandar Mitrovic’s 5TH minute strike in the game.

Shaqiri and Xhaka struck in the second half to give the lead to Switzerland and ensure their victory over Serbia but it was their celebration that grabbed the most attention.

Both players, who are ethnic Albanians and of Kosovar heritage, celebrated with a gesture which appeared to imitate the eagle displayed on Albania's flag.

“The FIFA Disciplinary Committee has opened disciplinary proceedings against the Swiss players Granit Xhaka and Xherdan Shaqiri for their goal celebration during the match Switzerland vs. Serbia,” the governing body said in a statement on Saturday, according to reports by Goal.com.

FIFA has also opened proceedings against the Serbian Football Association for “crowd disturbance and the display of political and offensive messages by Serbian fans”.

A preliminary investigation was opened against Serbia coach Mladen Krstajic for alleged statements made post-match.
