DoE fines 2 for assisting a factory responsible for polluting environment
Department of Environment (DoE) in Chattogram region fined one Saleh Carpet Mill and a union parishad chairman for assisting in the set-up and operation of a factory which eventually caused pollution in Chattogram's Sitakunda upazila.
Mahmudul Islam Chowdhury, owner of Saleh Carpet Mill and also former city administrator of Chattogram City Corporation and Monir Ahmed, chairman of Sonaichori union parishad, were each fined Tk one lakh, Mohammad Moazzom Hossain, director of DoE Chattogram told The Daily Star.
Owner of Saleh Carpet Mill was fined for leasing out the land to Hanga International -- a factory that recycles scrap metal and iron from shipbreaking yards -- which was responsible for causing air pollution and producing liquid waste.
The chairman of Sonaichori union parishad was fined for issuing trade licence without DoE clearance, Mohammad Moazzom Hossain said.
Mahmudul Islam Chowdhury, owner of Saleh Carpet Mill, told The Daily Star he leased a piece of land to a man but was not aware of what the land would be used for.
