Ctg DoE fines steel mill Tk 10 lakh for polluting air
The Department of Environment (DoE) today fined a steel mill in Chattogram city Tk 10 lakh for releasing suspended particulate matter (SPM) beyond the set limit.
The DoE slapped the fine on Saleh Steel Mill after a hearing at its office in Khulsi area of the port city.
Mohammed Nurullah Nuri, director of DoE (Chattogram metropolitan), told The Daily Star that air samples were taken from different areas adjacent to the steel mill.
After examining the samples, the SPM level was found to be between 308-468, whereas the standard is 200, he said adding that's why the mill was fined.
Saleh Steel Mill was also fined for the same offence last year, he added.
In the meantime, DoE in Chattogram region fined 12 businesses, including five brick kilns, Tk 5,23,000 over different offences, reports our Chattogram correspondent.
