Two dolphins found dead in Turag river
Two dolphins (Platanista gangetica) have been found dead over two days in the Turag river at Ashulia in Savar.
The first one's weight is around three maunds and it is five feet in length, and the second one's weight is around five maunds and it is five feet in length, locals said.
Abdus Sattar, a local, said that fishermen found the dolphins floating in the river. Later they informed the authority.
An unidentified person took away one of the dead dolphins from Ashulia bazar area at midnight but did not return, and another was recovered from Ashulia Fela ghat area by the fisheries officials around noon today, Sattar said.
"The dolphins might have died as the river is polluted from wastes and chemicals released by adjacent factories," Sattar added.
Kamrul Hasan Sarker, senior fisheries officer of Savar, said that Ganges dolphins were not seen in Turag river earlier.
"We suspect the dead dolphins might have entered the river during monsoon, got stranded here when the water receded in winter, and died due to pollution," he said.
Also, the river environment is not suitable for them, he added.
However, we informed Jahangirnagar University's zoology department to examine the dolphins, and the actual reason of their death would be known after receiving the examination report, he added.
