Elephant killing must be stopped: Environment minister
Environment, Forests and Climate Change Minister Md Shahab Uddin today said elephant killing must be stopped at any cost.
The minister came up with the order while addressing a view-exchange meeting as chief guest with local administration and people's representatives on -- elephant conservation and resolving elephant and human conflict -- at Satkania upazila in Chattogram, said a press release.
The government is working on a zero-tolerance policy to prevent any attempt to kill elephants and other wildlife, said the minister.
He handed over cheques as compensation to the people affected by the elephants in the area.
He said that the government is committed to ensuring that no more elephants, tigers or any other wildlife die unnecessarily.
He added that in recent times, legal action has been taken against those involved in a number of killings of wild elephants.
Referring to various initiatives taken by the government for the conservation of elephants, the minister said conventional roads and corridors for elephant movement are being restored and reforested.
Mentioning that banana trees and other herbaceous plants would be cultivated for elephant feed, he said, according to the release.
The release also stated that arrangements are being made to train the staff of the concerned forest department on resolving the elephant-human conflict.
Local lawmaker Abu Reza Muhammad Nezamuddin Nadvi, Additional Secretary of the environment ministry Sanjay Kumar Bhowmik, Chairman of Satkania Upazila Parishad MA Motaleb, Banshkhali upazila parishad Chairman Chowdhury Md Ghalib, and Additional Superintendent of Police Md Jahangir were present.
