Elephant calf found dead beside Teknaf’s Rohingya camp
An elephant calf was found dead near a Rohingya Camp in Teknaf upazila of Cox's Bazar this morning.
Forest officials, being notified by locals, recovered the nearly two-year-old calf from a stream in Shalbagan area adjacent to the camp, said Moniruzzaman, assistant conservator of Cox's Bazar Forest Division (South).
"We did not notice any bruise on its body. We asked a veterinary surgeon to perform an autopsy to determine the cause of its death", he said.
Cox's Bazar is among the last few habitats of Asian Elephants categorised as endangered species by International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).
The coastal district often sees death of the giant mammal largely due to manmade traps. Around 130 elephants died as of September, 2021 since 2001, according to the data available with the forest department.
