Burmese python rescued at CU

Released into forest

A Burmese python measuring around 12 feet in length and weighing approximately 19 kg was rescued in front of a house in Shobha Colony, near the central playground of Chittagong University last night.

Members of the Society for Snake and Snakebite Awareness rescued the python around 9:30pm. It was later safely released into the university's nearby forest.

According to members of the organisation, the residents spotted the large snake in front of their house and quickly contacted the group. The volunteer team promptly arrived at the scene and safely captured the non-venomous python, relocating it to a safe distance from the residential area.

Rafiqul Islam, director of the organisation, told The Daily Star that pythons often enter residential areas in search of food.

"We have rescued such snakes from the campus several times in the past. This python, too, has now been safely released into the university forest," he said.
