Anxious villagers chase elephant after it goes berserk in Gaibandha
Hundreds of people of some villages in Sadar upazila of Gaibandha today (April 17, 2022) ran an elephant with their lives at stake after the circus mammal went berserk throwing its mahout from its back and came to the locality.
The incident happened in the Tin Mile area of Sadar upazila around 9:00 am, reports our Bogura correspondent.
The elephant of a circus named "The Lakhi Seven" threw its mahout from his back and started running mile after mile through the paddy fields, according to witnesses.
Later, hundreds of people from nearby villages ran after the elephant to see it.
Talking to this correspondent, some officials of the Gaibandha Livestock and Forest Department said the elephant might have gone berserk due to lack of food, torture or due to breeding period.
"The elephant might have lost control due to lack of food or torture. We don't have any equipment to anaesthetize the elephant. This work belongs to the forest department," said Gaibandha Livestock Officer Masudar Rahman.
Shariful Islam, in-charge of Gaibandhal Forest Department said he visited the spot after being informed. They don't have any skilled manpower to control the elephant. "Elephants usually become so out of control during the breeding period."
"We have informed the matter to senior officials of the wildlife control unit. However, the mahout managed to control the elephant at 5:00 pm. There's no problem anymore," said the official.
Mahout Shakil Islam told The Daily Star that he came with the elephant to the Tin Mile area of Gaibandha Sadar upazila this morning.
"Another Mahout rode the back of the elephant when I started having breakfast. At that time, the elephant threw him off his back and started running. It is not crazy. The elephant was controlled before this evening," added Shakil.
