I never wanted to live as a star: Shabnam

Winning hearts with her performance in the superhit song "Ami Rupnogorer Rajkonna", Jharna Basak— better known by the stage name Shabnam—emerged as a household name in both Bangla and Pakistani cinema during the 1960's. Born on August 17, 1946 in Dhaka, Shabnam has many superhits to her name, including "Rajdhanir Bukey", "Kakhono Ashni", and "Harano Din".
The actress, who recently celebrated her birthday with her loved ones, shared her memories of working with some of the most cherished artistes of the Bangladeshi film industry with The Daily Star.
"I haven't visited the Bangladesh Film Development Corporation (BFDC) in a long time. As far as I remember, the last time I stepped through the gates of BFDC was months ago, that too only for a couple of minutes," shared Shabnam. "BFDC used to be one of my favourite places. However, a lot has changed over time. While the old walls of this place have been replaced, many close friends, whom I share fond memories with, have also said goodbye to this world."
Once a glamourous showbiz diva, Shabnam has always wanted to live a common life. "I have never wanted to live as a star. Rather, the simplicity and subtlety of Bengali culture is what I preferred throughout my life," shared the artiste.
Despite starring in numerous Pakistani productions, Shabnam rarely preferred to wear anything but Bengali attire while on screen.
"I still have glimpses of memories from the time I went to Old Dhaka. I used to live there and have amazing memories from that place, especially the sound of galloping hooves from horse carriages," recalled Shabnam.
Referring to her achievements or regrets, Shabnam responded, "People's love is the biggest achievement of my life. I have received the love of millions of people, so there is no dissatisfaction from that side."
Defining her ground as the first romantic-heroine of the industry, Shabnam has delivered numerous evergreen melodies. "Tomare Legeche Atto je Bhalo" from the film "Rajdhanir Bukey", "Aynate Oi Mukh Dekhbe Jokhon" from "Nacher Putul", and "Mon Je Dole Bashir Shure" are some of her most memorable songs.
Shabnam also garnered praise for her performances in Pakistani films, and has been honoured with the Nigar Awards 13 times. Her last film "Ammajan" was released in 1999.
