ISD honours frontline workers in ‘Heroes of Our Time’ exhibition at Le Méridien
International School Dhaka (ISD) has inaugurated a special, traveling art exhibition titled "Heroes of Our Time" at Le Méridien on June 5. The exhibition honours the brilliant frontline workers who have fought courageously during the deadly Covid-19 pandemic.
The exhibition showcased artworks from students---of grades three to ten---, teachers and staff from ISD, who came together to depict a beautiful tale of empathy, humanity, and heroism through different mediums of visual art.
Most of the paintings were a combination of acrylic on canvas and mixed media.
The primary students did a collaborative work titled "Thank You" which was done using acrylic on cardstock. Each one of the paintings reflected images of various groups of people who helped us during the pandemic---starting from doctors, nurses, rickshaw-pullers, and restaurant delivery men, among others. The students used cool and warm colours to accentuate the heart at the centre of the painting.
Another art-work which is exceptionally unique was the tree full of medical masks. The masks were coloured with various yellow, blue, and purple shades. The painting stood as if it was a symbol of the time when masks were our only saviour against the gruesome COVID-19 pandemic.
Students in grades 9 to 10 also drew cartoon strips where they portrayed "Doctors as heroes" with the shield of the powerful vaccine on their hands.
"Warrior", painted with mixed-media and acrylic was done by international visual arts teacher, Bridget Hazvineyi Mutasa. The painting had a background of existing newspapers and pictures of the virus, coupled with a strong and indomitable image of a female front-liner who stood firmly against Covid-19.
Thomas Van der Wielen, Director of International School Dhaka (ISD), said, "The healthcare community and workers in the hospitality industry continued providing their services despite the risks of COVID-19. As a tribute to these heroes, ISD began this traveling art exhibition. The students and teachers curated thought-provoking and reflective art pieces that evoke courage and kindness."
Constantinos S Gavriel, General Manager, Le Méridien Dhaka, said, "We are delighted to be able to showcase ISD's beautiful and thought-provoking artwork on our premises. We hope that getting an eyeful of these art pieces will allow people to recognise the consistent efforts made by all the frontliners during such a difficult time."
The traveling art exhibition "Heroes of our time" was first exhibited at Evercare, and now at Le Méridien. The exhibition will continue till June 11. Art lovers can enjoy the exhibitions at the hotel's lobby and poolside (Sky Lounge).
