Bhoirobee revives Dwijendralal Roy’s legacy on stage

The iconic song "Dhono Dhanno Pushpo Bhora" captures the spirit and essence of the Bengali people, each line echoing their emotions and identity. Written by the eminent Dwijendralal Roy, a revered figure among the five greats of Bengali music, this masterpiece continues to resonate across generations.

In honour of his death anniversary, the Theatre and Film Department of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy (BSA) staged a musical drama titled "Shurer Doyal Roy". The production—brought to life by the cultural research and performing arts organisation Bhoirobee's musical troupe—was presented on May 17 at the Academy's Experimental Theatre Hall. It was conceptualised and directed by Eleas Nabi Faisal, the founder of Bhoirobee.

The show opened with the song set in Raag Bhairavi and Tritaal rhythm, "Aji Nutan Ratane". It progressed with a sequence of performances to celebrated compositions such as "Ghana Tamasaabrita Ambarm Dharani", "Aji Esechhi Bodhu", and "Bela Boye Jay". The performances interlaced dance, recitation, and music, culminating in a poetic finale with the lyrical piece.

The stage came alive in tribute to Dwijendralal Roy's musical legacy. With nearly 50 performers, the production painted a vibrant portrait of his life, ideology, and artistic brilliance. Through a harmonious blend of drama, music, and choreography, the show unfolded as a cultural symphony, offering audiences a renewed vision of the legendary composer.

Earlier in the evening, Mohammad Jasim Uddin, deputy director of the Theatre and Film Department of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy, welcomed guests. He expressed, "Dwijendralal was a true sculptor of melody. His songs still touch our souls. We are delighted to bring those songs and melodies to the stage."

Director Eleas Nabi Faisal shared his vision with the audience, emphasising, "We believe that through music, we can touch history. Dwijendralal Roy was not only a musical figure but also a torchbearer of free thought. His songs symbolised protest, love, patriotism, and courage. In this musical play, we tried to guide the audience back into a deeper time, where music and the nation became one."
