‘The importance of sound design cannot be overstated’
Playing with onomatopoeic elements on the screen, sound designer and engineer Arafat Kirty's latest hits "Networker Baire", "Tithir Osukh" and "Khachar Bhitor Ochin Pakhi", among others, have been a treat to the ears for the audience.
Beginning his journey in 2007 with Radio Foorti as a sound engineer, Kirty decided to move to London to study Music Production and Audio Engineering at Middlesex University in 2008. Coming back to his roots, Kirty came back and started experimenting in his arena with the famed Studio 58 Production, alongside his brother.
In 2013, Kirty was finally paired with RunOut, working on his first full-length tele-film "@18 - All Time Dourer Upor".
We talk to the seasoned sound designer for his thoughts on the profession.
Sound design is a profession that has been mostly unheard of in Bangladesh. Why did you choose to take it up?
I grew fond of the industry when my grandfather, celebrated art director Abdus Sabur, first introduced me to it. Following that dream, I chose to pursue this career, but I wanted to have a strong theoretical ground first. That is why I stepped into it after I came back from London.
What are the challenges you faced in your initial days?
While living abroad, I was often side-lined in the creative sector, as they said I had cultural barriers as I come from an Asian background.
When I came back, this arena was untouched, and it took me a while to build up the eagerness, and stress the importance that sound has in visual media.
Sound design has emerged as a new point of interest for the industry, and now more people are talking about it. What has changed over the years?
I feel we had to struggle, as our predecessors were not as welcoming and tolerant as we expected them to be. However, with time, the industry has grown to become like a cooperative hub, where we can leave our seeds to carry forward trends.
I am always open to train the ones who look to have a career in sound designing as I believe, that way, this profession will be able to gain limelight.
What are your upcoming ventures?
I believe OTT platforms have emerged as a revelation, and this has managed to create a lot of scopes for us. Currently, I am working on numerous TVCs, OVCs, television productions, and web releases.
I welcome all the directors to explore and incorporate sound design, as I want them to see how a simple alteration or addition of sound can change the whole face of production. 'The importance of sound design cannot be overstated'
