Heavy metal gets a Garo twist in Heevklaw’s ‘Janggi Tangani’

Garo community band Heevklaw released a powerful heavy metal track titled "Janggi Tangani" on March 31. The song is a Garo-language rendition of their original English track "Cryptic Magic".
"Janggi Tangani" delves into a wide spectrum of emotions—joy, sorrow, anger, frustration, and moments of quiet hope. The raw intensity of the vocalist's voice is heightened by the thunderous blend of electric guitar, bass, and drums.
The music video was shot in Nadda-Kalachandpur, a Garo-populated neighbourhood in Dhaka.
In a Facebook post, the band shared, "One of the reasons for choosing this location was to help Garo youth connect more deeply with the song. We wanted them to see their own lives reflected in it—so that the song becomes an expression of their sorrow, frustration, anger, hope, and aspirations."
Every aspect of the project—from lyrics and recording to video editing and choreography—was led by Garo youth.
The English-to-Garo translation was carried out by Debashish Emmanuel Rema, while Jajong Nokrek handled the video editing. Trideep Prapto Rema took care of the sound recording, with filming support provided by Donald Ch Marak, Provab Mrong, and Sabbir Chicham. Adding to its cultural richness, the music video also includes a traditional Garo dance performance by Kripa Ritchil.
