DoE fines Cox’s Bazar UP chairman Tk 10 lakh for cutting hill

The Department of Environment (DoE) in Chattogram has fined a union parishad chairman Tk 10 lakh for cutting a hill in Sadar upazila of Cox's Bazar.

The fine was imposed after a hearing at the DoE office in Khulsi area of the port city today, reports our Chattogram correspondent.

Mohammad Moazzom Hossain, director of DoE in Chattogram, said UP chairman Md Kalam in collaboration with four others cut more than one lakh cubic feet of a hill in the area recently.

Cutting hill requires permission from the DoE, the official said adding, they were fined as they did not obtain any permission.

Apart from this, the DoE fined Khwaja Ship Breaking Yard Tk 1 lakh for breaching clearance conditions and six diagnostic centres, including a pharmaceutical company, were fined Tk1.50 for different reasons.
