An alleged criminal was killed in a "shootout" with Rab members in Dhaka's Pallabi area early today.
Mohsin alias "Killer Mohsin" belonged to a gang named after a top criminal Shahadat Hossain, Rab said.
He was absconding after receiving life term in prison in a murder case. Some other cases, including for murders, against him are under trial, said Mozammel Haque, commanding officer of Rab-4.
The gunfight happened around 2:30am when a team of Rab carried out a raid at Eastern Housing area on information that some criminals and drug peddlers gathered there, he claimed.
Sensing Rab presence, the criminals opened fire at the law enforcers who fired back, resulting in a "gun battle", the Rab official claimed.
One of the criminals sustained injuries from bullets while others fled. He was taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital where doctors declared him dead.
Rab claimed they later found that the dead was Mohsin, belonging to the gang known as "Shahadat Bahini".
Rab claimed to have recovered a firearm, two bullets and 1,100 pieces of yaba from the spot.
