Two suspected human traffickers arrested from Noakhali
Detectives today claimed to have arrested two members of an international human trafficking gang in a drive in Noakhali's Begumganj upazila last night.
The arrestees, Jahangir Alam (55) and Anwar Hossain Prokash alias Kala Mia (28) residents of Uttar Jirtoli village of the upazila are associates in an international human trafficking gang, Kamruzzaman Sikdar, officer-in-charge of Detective Branch (DB) of Police in Noakhali office, told our local correspondent.
The duo took Tk 3.50 lakh from one Kulsum, a resident of Anantapur village in the upazila, through bKash with promises to send her to Italy. They also demanded Tk 2.50 lakh more from her, the OC said.
Kulsum informed the matter to Md Alamgir Hossain, superintendent of police in Noakhali. Following his instruction, she lodged a case with Kabirhat Police Station under Human Trafficking Prevention Act on Wednesday.
Last night, a team of DB police carried out raids at Jirtoli village and arrested Alam and Prokash and produced them before a Noakhali court this afternoon and the court sent them to jail, the DB official said.
Talking to the correspondent, Alamgir Hossain said Alam and Kala Mia were engaged in trafficking people to Libya in the name of sending them to Italy. They also extorted ransom from the people by holding them hostage in Libya.
