Rohingya man killed in ‘gunfight’ with police in Bandarban

A Rohingya man, who police claim was a drug dealer, died in an alleged gunfight with law enforcers in Naikhyangchhari upazila of Bandarban earlier in the day.

The deceased was identified as Shah Alam (45), a Rohingya refugee from Ukhiya camp, reports our local correspondent quoting Mohammad Alamgir Hossain, officer-in-charge (OC) of Naikhyangchhari Police Station.

Police arrested Shah Alam on Tuesday night at 12:00am and conducted a raid at Ghumdhum area, adjacent to Myanmar border, to recover drugs, OC Alamgir said.

When police reached the spot, Shah Alam's cohorts allegedly opened fire targeting police to snatch Shah Alam, the OC said. This prompted policemen to retaliate triggering a gunfight, the OC further added.

After the gunfight, police found Shah Alam dead on the spot. A gun, three bullets and 40,000 yaba pills were recovered from the spot, according to the OC.

The Daily Star could not independently verify the claims of police.
